Frequently Asked Questions
Q | Who is eligible? Adults and older teens (15+) in Ontario are eligible. Clients must be located in Ontario for all online appointments. ⸻ Q | Do I need a referral to begin? No referral is required. ⸻ Q | How do I start? You can begin by booking an initial session, or starting with a brief meet-and-greet. ⸻ Q | Can voice therapy be done online? Yes. Voice therapy is highly effective online and is often preferred. We assess and work on key aspects of voice including vocal quality, effort, coordination, and endurance. Sessions also take place in your real-world speaking environments, which supports carryover. If needed, we may recommend an in-person assessment with an ENT to visualize the vocal folds. We can guide you through this process and collaborate with your care team. ⸻ Q | Is Voice Therapy & Training covered by insurance? Yes. As all clinicians at SpeechAppeal are registered Speech-Language Pathologists, services are typically eligible for private or third-party insurance coverage. We recommend checking directly with your provider regarding your specific plan. ⸻ Q | How long will it take? Duration depends on your goals, voice condition, and practice consistency. Many clients begin with an initial 4-session foundation phase to establish direction and early progress. ⸻ Q | Will I be assigned exercises? Yes. You will receive individualized exercises designed to improve vocal coordination, ease, stamina, and efficiency while supporting healthy voice use. ⸻ Q | Do all Speech-Language Pathologists treat voice? All sessions are delivered online. ⸻ Q | What makes SpeechAppeal unique? Our clinicians are specialized Speech-Language Pathologists with advanced training in voice. This includes expertise in vocology and singing voice specialization. We combine evidence-based voice therapy with a holistic, client-centred approach to support both vocal health and performance. ⸻ Q | What makes a Voice Therapist different from a Speech-Language Pathologist? Voice Therapists are Speech-Language Pathologists who have developed deeper expertise through specialized training and extensive clinical voice experience. At SpeechAppeal, our clinicians have advanced training in voice. We continue ongoing training with leading experts in the field (including Hirsch, Helou, Stemple, Schmidt, Goodwin, and others) and are or have been involved in voice organizations such as PAVA, VASTA, PAMA, NATS, and BVA. We draw from evidence-informed approaches including Resonant Voice Therapy and LMRVT, Conversational Training Therapy, Flow Phonation, the Accent Method, SOVTEs, and singing voice rehabilitation, alongside breath–voice coordination, laryngeal manual therapy, myofascial release, and mindfulness-informed techniques. Assessment and treatment are guided by both perceptual and objective measures, including acoustic analysis. We consistently see strong outcomes in voice rehabilitation and high client satisfaction, with progress reflected in client-reported change, objective voice measures, and, when appropriate, follow-up medical evaluation (e.g., ENT reassessment). ⸻ Q | Is it possible to work on singing voice? Yes. Singing voice work is available through our Singing Voice Therapy services with our Singing Voice Specialist. ⸻ Q | I am a referring physician. How can I send a referral?
