Adult Stuttering Support

Support that meets you where you are now

For adults & teens (15+) | Online across Toronto & Ontario

Many adults who come to us have already explored traditional speech therapy in the past. Our sessions focus on ongoing support, real-life practice, tune-ups, maintenance, and communication coaching that reflects your current goals and communication demands.

You may be noticing...

  • Previously learned strategies no longer feel like a good fit, or may feel “outgrown"

  • You sometimes avoid certain situations or speaking to reduce the risk of stuttering

  • You are experiencing internal and/or physical tension and discomfort when speaking

  • You may change words or rephrase to avoid stuttering

  • Stuttering repetitions, prolongations, or blocks feel out of control

  • Your communication may not always reflect your confidence or intentions

  • Speaking can feel effortful, especially when you’re trying to “stay fluent” or in control

  • You may feel tension, anticipation, or anxiety before or during speaking moments

  • You could benefit from supportive guidance to prepare for upcoming events (e.g., meetings, interviews, presentations, podcasts)

We support adults and older teens (15+ with guardian consent) who stutter in developing greater ease, confidence, and flexibility in everyday communication.

Many people we work with have already explored traditional speech therapy in the past and are looking for ongoing support, real-life practice, and communication coaching focused on applying skills in everyday speaking situations such as interviews, meetings, presentations, social interactions, and podcasts.

Each program is individualized and focuses on supporting both speech patterns and the real-world experience of speaking. This includes integrating evidence-based fluency approaches with strategies for breath and voice coordination, tension release, managing speaking pressure, working through moments of apprehension in communication, and 1-1 guidance in preparing for special projects or upcoming presentations.

Stuttering

Understanding Stuttering

Stuttering (or stammering) is a neurodevelopmental difference in speech fluency that involves disruptions in the natural flow of speech. It is typically understood as the result of a combination of factors, including speech-motor coordination, neurological and genetic influences, and individual differences in communication development.

For adults, stuttering is rarely experienced as only a speech pattern. It is often shaped over time by communication history, speaking experiences, and learned responses to certain situations. These experiences can influence not only speech, but also how speaking feels in the moment, including anticipation, tension, avoidance, or effort in specific contexts.

Because of this, stuttering presents differently for each person. Our approach reflects this variability by focusing on both speech and the lived experience of communication: how speaking feels, how it is navigated in real time, and what supports greater ease and confidence across contexts.

Can Stuttering Be Eliminated?

Our focus is not complete elimination of stuttering. Instead, support is centred on:

  • reducing frequency and severity of stuttering moments

  • decreasing tension and struggle during speaking

  • strengthening confidence and communication authenticity

  • supporting more flexible communication across real-life situations

What to Expect

We begin by understanding your speaking patterns, communication contexts, and lived experience of stuttering across different situations.

From there, support is tailored to your needs and may include both structured skill-building and real-world applicat

This may involve:

  • fluency shaping strategies to support smoother and more coordinated speech

  • stuttering modification techniques to increase ease during moments of stuttering

  • breath and voice coordination to support timing and flow

  • strategies to reduce physical tension and speaking anxiety

  • exploration of thoughts, beliefs, and communication patterns that influence confidence and avoidance

  • guided preparation or practice for real-life speaking situations such as presentations, meetings, interviews, or recordings

  • opportunities to explore and refine communication patterns in a supportive, low-pressure setting

Through guided practice, feedback, and reflection, strategies are progressively applied to increasingly natural and demanding speaking situations.

Our Approach

Our work is grounded in an adult-centred model of communication support.

We recognize that adult speaking demands are complex and high-stakes: professional expectations, leadership roles, interviews, presentations, and social dynamics all shape how communication is experienced in real time.

Rather than focusing solely on speech techniques, we address communication as a whole experience, including:

  • core speech behaviours such as repetitions, prolongations, and blocks

  • physical and behavioural responses that develop over time

  • thoughts, emotions, and communication patterns that influence confidence, avoidance, and ease

We integrate evidence-based fluency shaping and stuttering modification approaches with breath and voice coordination, desensitization strategies, and guided real-world practice.

A key focus is skill transfer and supporting communication strategies to hold outside of sessions and within real speaking environments, not just in sessions.

Ongoing Support

Communication needs naturally evolve over time as roles, expectations, and speaking demands change.

For many adults, progress continues after initial gains, particularly as communication becomes more complex or high-stakes.

We offer ongoing support through check-ins, refresher sessions, or targeted tune-ups to help maintain, refine, and strengthen communication skills over time.

This may include revisiting strategies, building confidence in new speaking situations, or adjusting tools as communication demands shift.
