Each program at SpeechAppeal is fully individualized, so the pace and length will vary depending on your voice health, current skills, and comfort level. To give a general idea, many programs move through these phases:

Foundations and Health

Start with building a strong, healthy voice foundation. This includes advanced and therapeutic exercises to support flexibility, stamina, and long-lasting voice use. Foundations in voice health are integrated throughout the program, and some voices may benefit from extra care before moving into more dynamic exploration.

Play and Blend

Explore a variety of vocal qualities, shapes, and colours. Experiment with pitch, resonance, vocal mass or weight, and quality to discover combinations that feel natural and expressive. This phase emphasizes playful experimentation while staying grounded in your voice goals.

Build with Control

Focus on consistency and control. Practice structured reading, in-session conversation, and targeted exercises to maintain your blend with conscious awareness.

Extend

Bring practice into real-life situations, moving voice through different contexts and emotions. Create a plan for carry-over that supports mindful, intentional, and adaptable communication in everyday life.

Tune-Ups and Beyond

Check in periodically to refresh skills, continue building unconscious carry-over, optimize voice health, or work toward more complex goals—like preparing for presentations, podcasts, or developing an affirming singing voice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take? It is different for everyone and that’s completely normal. Many factors affect how long it might take, such as your goals, voice health, skill, comfort exploring new voice patterns, opportunities to use your voice in real life, time, and resources. Think of it like learning any new skill. It takes consistent practice to build new neural pathways and muscle memory. We help you break goals into achievable steps so that progress feels realistic and meaningful. Will there be guided exercises? Yes. You will receive handouts, recordings, and exercises tailored to your goals. These activities fit naturally into your daily routine and reinforce what you practice during sessions. How often will we meet? It depends on your learning style and needs. Many clients start with biweekly sessions and adjust as confidence and independence grow. Sessions can be shorter or longer based on your phase of learning. You can pause or change your schedule at any time. Planning breaks between phases can actually support progress and help consolidate skills. When will using my voice become automatic and unconscious? Unconscious voice carry-over is possible, but it takes time and practice across a variety of real-life situations. In the extend phase, we focus on helping you access your goal voice even in high-focus settings. Troubleshooting and check-ins can be useful, but most people require less direct support at this stage because the voice is being integrated naturally. Can I learn more about my clinician? Yes. Visit our team page or book a free online Meet and Greet to get to know us and see how we work. I am taking testosterone, how can voice training help? Pitch is only one part of the voice. Many people want to work on timbre, tone, stamina, flexibility, projection, smoothing breaks, and overall vocal confidence. Voice training can help refine these areas, even after hormone therapy. I want my voice to sound higher, but it is very low. Is this a problem? A healthy starting voice is not a barrier. Pitch training is often successful, but other foundations like resonance, weight, quality, and intonation often have an even bigger impact on how your voice feels and sounds. What if I am considering voice modification surgery? Some people choose this option. We can support pre-op and post-op voice care. Voice training can help with recovery, refine goals, and support alignment with your desired voice. Will insurance cover this? Yes. Our sessions are eligible for submission to third-party insurance under speech therapy or paramedical services. There is no need to specify gender-affirming voice on invoices. Please check with your provider about coverage, budgets, or requirements. We do not do direct billing. What if I am working within a budget? You can book shorter sessions, schedule blocks with planned pauses, or ask about our next Gender Affirming Voice Training Group. Groups can be more affordable and still provide excellent practice. Email admin@speechappeal.ca to ask about group options. Can I start, stop, or pause sessions? Yes. Sessions are flexible to suit your schedule and pace. Pausing between phases can actually help consolidate learning and support long-term progress. I am a Teen, can I participate? We support Teens 15+ with parental consent. Email to inquire email admin@speechappeal.ca to inquire about case-by-case considerations for ages 13 and 14. Do you have a sliding scale? Not at this time, but groups can be a good option for cost-conscious clients. Email admin@speechappeal.ca to ask about group availability. Clients must be in Ontario at the time of their virtual appointment. More questions? Email admin@speechappeal.ca and we'll be happy to chat!
